Why Choose a Dekton® Dining Table?
What are the key benefits of a Dekton® Dining Table over other materials, and is it the best choice for your dining space?

Dekton® is an ultra-compact surface made by Cosentino from natural minerals fused under heat and pressure. On a dining table it gives a top that resists heat, stains, scratches and sunlight, and it needs very little upkeep beyond a wipe with a damp cloth.

This guide explains what Dekton is, how it copes with everyday use, where it needs a little care and how it compares with granite, quartzite and marble. It also sets out the thickness, edge and size choices behind our bespoke Dekton dining tables.

What is Dekton?

Dekton is a brand of ultra-compact surface produced by Cosentino. It is engineered rather than cut from a quarry, with natural minerals combined into one solid surface.

At Fairmont Reed, each Dekton top is made to order and fixed to the base you choose, so the size, shape, colour and legs are specified for your room.

How is Dekton made?

Dekton is made using sintered particle technology. Natural minerals are subjected to extreme heat and pressure, which fuses them together. The finished surface has almost zero porosity, so liquids have nowhere to soak in and the top does not need sealing.

The Benefits of Using Dekton® for Your Dining Room Table

The main benefits are resistance to heat, stains, scratches and sunlight, no sealing routine and a wide choice of colours and textures:

  • Heat resistance: Dekton is designed to withstand hot saucepans, frying pans and coffee makers placed on the surface.
  • Stain resistance: Almost zero porosity keeps liquids on the surface, so spills such as red wine and coffee wipe away without leaving a mark.
  • Scratch resistance: Domestic utensils will not scratch a Dekton top, although a chopping board is still recommended to protect your knives.
  • UV resistance: The surface is unaffected by UV rays, so the colour does not fade in a bright dining room.
  • No sealing: There is no sealer to apply or renew, unlike natural stone tops.
  • Choice of looks: Colours and textures range from marble-inspired patterns to industrial concrete tones, and every top is made to order in the size, shape and colour you choose.

How does a Dekton top cope with everyday dining?

A dining table meets hot dishes, spills, cutlery and sunlight in the course of an ordinary week. Dekton handles each of them in a different way:

  • Heat: Dekton is designed to withstand hot saucepans, frying pans and coffee makers placed on the surface.
  • Spills: Liquids stay on the surface rather than soaking in, so spills such as red wine and coffee wipe away without leaving a stain.
  • Scratches: Domestic utensils will not scratch a Dekton top. A chopping board is still recommended, mainly to protect your knives.
  • Sunlight: The surface is unaffected by UV rays, so the colour does not fade in a bright dining room.
  • Cleaning: A damp, soft cloth and a mild soap solution, dried with a microfibre cloth or paper towel, is the standard routine. Antibacterial cleaners are fine, and specialist stone cleaning products should be tested on a small area first. Avoid products containing hydrofluoric acid, which can damage the surface.

Looking after your Dekton table:

Dekton is very hard, and a few habits keep it in good condition.

How do you protect the edges and corners of a Dekton table?

Like any very hard surface, it can chip if a corner or edge takes a heavy knock, such as a heavy pan set down hard or a chair driven into the table. The flat surface copes easily with ordinary use, so the edges deserve the extra attention.

Edge profile is worth discussing with our team when you design your table.

Can a Dekton table take sustained heat?

Yes, a Dekton table can handle heat when used sensibly. A hot pan on its own is no problem, but a warming tray, slow cooker or other appliance that gives off heat in one place for a long time belongs on a mat or other protection. The surface is designed to withstand heat, and a mat simply protects it over long periods of exposure.

What should you know about the weight of a Dekton table?

Our tables are extremely heavy, so someone needs to be at the property to sign for the delivery and advise on where the table goes. It is worth checking the route into the room before you order, and the top and base are chosen together. Our table bases and delivery page have the details.

Can a Dekton dining table be used outdoors?

Yes. Dekton is UV resistant, so the colour does not fade in sunlight, and our Dekton garden tables are designed for outdoor use. Care is the same as for an indoor top. We recommend a suitable table cover whenever possible, particularly in inclement weather, and after heavy rain the base should not be left submerged in water.

Is a Dekton dining table right for your home?

Dekton suits you if:

  • You would rather not seal: There is no sealer to apply or renew, unlike granite and quartzite.
  • The table is used every day: Heat, spills and cutlery are part of normal family meals.
  • You like the look of stone without its upkeep: Colours and textures range from marble-inspired patterns to industrial concrete tones.

You may prefer something else if:

  • You like a surface that develops character: Some owners prefer the patina that marble builds over the years.
